Man Utd opinion: It's been a while since we've seen the real Wayne Rooney

Former Manchester United man David Sadler says the England striker is still struggling to find his best form for club and country. Wayne Rooney will surpass Sir Bobby Charlton's goal scoring record for England but I have concerns over Wayne's overall form.

There are some poor international sides and we saw that last week in the game against San Marino at Wembley.

It frustrates the life out of me that the people in charge of the game - UEFA in this case - don't create a system so we can avoid these meaningless matches. Let's have a schedule where these smaller countries can eliminate themselves.

Why waste time when you know the outcome? All you get is games where the crowd cheers the keeper in the second half because he has actually touched the ball.

There are plenty of coaches who attend seminars and so can build little fortresses to try and stop the opposition scoring. If they played England in a casual, free flowing type of match they would get slaughtered.

They might score a goal themselves but you would end up with a few 9-1, 8-2 score lines. Don't get me wrong Bobby will have played against any number of so called lesser nations to boost his goal scoring rate. But while the present system continues Wayne will have his opportunity to overtake Bobby's record of 49 goals.

I do think though it has been a long time since we have seen what you would consider to be the real Rooney and the top quality player he can be.

Because he is an all-round good player he seems to be filling so many different positions. I will, however, get really worried if he starts playing in the back four. And because of this adaptability he sometimes finds himself in areas where we has less chance to score goals which is what we all want to see him do.

Goalkeeper is another of the positions Wayne hasn't filled yet and no-one is going to move David De Gea from the number one position at the moment.

De Gea has been outstanding and I am giving myself a pat on the back here because I wasn't one of those jumping on the bandwagon suggesting he was too frail or fragile.

He's always had a good goalkeeping head on him. I spoke with Alex Stepney when De Gea first came to the club and Alex said there was a bit of something about him.

Yes, he was getting knocked around a bit but that wasn't always going to be the case. I thought there would come a time when he was as good as anything else there is out there.

And since the end of his first year with United he has been, if not the best keeper in the Premier League, up there with the top one or two. With his present form-and we saw that with his penalty save and other stops against Everton, he is the top keeper on show in the Premier League. United are back in Premier League action at West Brom on Saturday and hopefully, for once, this international break has done them some good. Normally, they seem to go away and get players injured.

This time they already had plenty of injured before the break started so this time maybe the time has helped a few of those players to recover so we get some of them back.

Given the injuries, United will be pleased to resume in fourth place. But it is a false position for a variety of reasons, none more so than we haven't played any of the so called title contenders. And the league is still a bit upside down because of these interruptions for internationals.

There have been some sides that have copped for very tough fixtures and others, like United, who, in the main, have had good fixtures which you would pick if you had the choice.

Having said that it's alright having games you expect United to win. But you have then got to go out and win them. And we saw at times under David Moyes that was easier said than done.
